Dr. Amitabh Roy teaches in the Department of English at Alipurduar Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Alipurduar. His reading and analysis of Baudelaire reveals his penchant for dark poetry. At the University of North Bengal, he dedicated his time towards understanding of Baudelaire’s poetry. His insight in this matter is a reflection of his urge to present the French poet from a new perspective.
Baudelaire is popularly painted as a poet representing darkness and the pangs of the then Parisian society.Roy tries to challenge this notion. His writings on Baudelaire are a reflection of his deep liking for the French Poet. This book is a collection of essays on Baudelaire attempting to portray him not as a morbid poet but as a poet with a zest for life.
Baudelaire is presented as a poet, who through his symbolism has indicated his inclination towards the brighter aspects of life. This book is a departure from the conventional way of assessing Baudelaire as an anti – life poet. His writings are a reflection of his own philosophy of life which is to go beyond the social norms. His creative spirit and his desire to break free from traditions have been beautifully expressed through an analysis of Baudelaire’s poems.
This book will be Roy’s third monograph. Prior to this book, he devoted his time towards analysing journey of women through the ‘modern’ society in Shashi Deshpande’s Journey from Tradition to Modernity. His first book The God of Small Things: A Novel of Social Commitment has also been widely accepted.
